The Division of Applied Mechanics was started in 2010, and is composed of about 12 people active in teaching solid mechanics and structural engineering, as well as in research in the mechanics of fibrous materials, e.g. nanocomposites, wood, paper, fibre composites, implants, and structural applications of composite materials. It is part of the Department of Engineering Sciences, located at the Ångström Laboratory.

Founded in 1477, Uppsala University is the oldest university in the Nordic countries. There are 40,000 students at the university, many of which study science and technology.
