In frame of the Region Network of Wood Research Centers DANUBE network partners of the Department of wood science of the Mendel University in Brno and the piano manufacturer Petrof in Hradec Králové were visited by Partners from University for Sustainable Development in Eberswalde. A guided tour through the laboratories of the University conveyed a substantial impression of current projects and meanwhile a brief discussion with the Assistant Professor of the department Ing. Jan Tippner, Ph.D. and colleagues ensured an exchange of several topics and first ideas for further potential corporate projects between Mendel University and HNEE. At Petrof company the R&D manager Ing. Tadeáš Doskočil was giving an impressive company tour whereas it was possible to provide an insight into the complex production of grand and upright pianos starting with the preparation of different materials for the huge range of parts, the sensitive manufacturing of the soundboard and the production of the strings until the assembling of all parts. Furthermore it was possible to visit the company owned anechoic room in which a current research project takes place to estimate acoustical properties of different pianos. Altogether it was a very impressive journey and a good possibility for an exchange about material science together with piano making.
